Chief of the Defence Staff Announces General/Flag Officer Promotions, Appointments and Releases

Building on the announcements made in 2024, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Jennie Carignan, revealed more General/Flag Officer promotions, appointments and releases of 2024.

“I offer my congratulations and sincere best wishes to those taking on new appointments and responsibilities,” said the CDS in CANFORGEN 013/25.

The CANFORGEN is an amendment of CANFORGEN 125/24, announcing the initial crop of General/Flag Officer promotions for 2024.

Chief of the Defence Staff, Jennie Carignan, revealed more General/Flag Officer promotions, appointments and releases of 2024.

Additional Appointees

The updated CANFORGEN announced the following promotions in 2024:

  • BGen. K.D. Brodie was promoted Major-General (acting while so employed) and appointed Chief of Staff Canadian Joint Operations Command, in Ottawa. BGen. Brodie replaces Men. J.A. Bernard.

  • Col. V.M. Hanrahan was promoted to Brigadier-General and appointed Canadian Forces Provost Marshal and Commander, Canadian Forces Military Police Group, in Ottawa. Col. Hanrahan replaces MGen. J.S. Trudeau.

  • Col. H.S. Morrison was promoted to Brigadier-General and appointed Chief of Staff, Army Operations, in Ottawa. Col. Morrison replaces Brigadier-General L.W. Rutland.

  • Col. P.V. Ursich was promoted to Brigadier-General and appointed Deputy Commander, 3 Canadian Division, in Edmonton. Col. Ursich replaces BGen. N.D. Stanton.

Left to right, BGen. K.D. Brodie was promoted Major-General (acting while so employed), Gen. Wayne Eyre, and MGen. P.J. Peyton.

2024 Retirees

The CDS also acknowledged the CAF General and Flag Officers who released in 2024.

They include:

  • Gen. Wayne Eyre,
  • MGen. P.J. Peyton,
  • BGen. K.A. Ballinger,
  • BGen. J.P. Picard.
Some notable appointments in 2024 announced include left, to right, Army Commander LGen. M.C. Wright, Chief of Professional Conduct and Culture LGen. J.P.R. Prevos and Commander Canadian Joint Operations Command LGen. J.M.S. Boivin.

2024 First Batch of Appointees

After stepping into her new role as CDS, Gen. Carignan announced several General/Flag Officer promotions, appointments and releases last year.

Some notable appointments announced include MGen. J.M.S. Boivin’s appointment as Lieutenant-General and appointed Commander Canadian Joint Operations Command in Ottawa. MGen. Boivin replaced VAdm. J.R. Auchterlonie.

The new Chief of Professional Conduct and Culture was also announced. The position vacated by the CDS, Gen. Carignan, will now be taken by MGen. J.P.R. Prevost, who has also been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General.

Additionally, the new commander of the Canadian Army was announced. Gen. Jocelyn Paul has been replaced by MGen. M.C. Wright. MGen. Wright was also promoted to Lieutenant- General for this appointment.
