Dec 2011 – Ottawa, ON Wreaths ornament the base of every tombstone at the Beechwood National Military Cemetery in Ottawa. The wreaths were placed during the inaugural Wreaths Across Canada ceremony. Wreaths Across Canada Inc. is a non-profit organization started in 2007 by Craig McPhee a veteran of the Canadian Forces. It is based on the Wreaths Across America organization that started in 1992 at Arlington Cemetery and has now spread to 300 military cemeteries in the United States. During the inaugural ceremony, hundreds of people who attended the ceremony helped to place a balsam wreath on each of the 2,710 veteran’s headstones in the National Military Cemetery, located at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. Wreaths Across Canada aims to remember those members of the Canadian Forces who lie in military cemeteries across Canada; to honour those who have served Canada as members of our military forces; and to teach Canadian youth the value of freedom.
