Members of the Newfoundland Regiment stand with respect in a vigil party in our favourite photo of the week.

The vigil party coincided with the repatriation, lying in state and interment of an Unknown Newfoundland Soldier. Although the soldier’s identity is unknown, what is known is he was a First World War Soldier enlisted with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. His body was exhumed from France this past May, and he returned home to Newfoundland.

He was laid to rest in Tomb of the Unknown Newfoundland Soldier in St. John’s at the National War Memorial on July 1, 2024. The tomb will act as a gravesite for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, as well as, those who served the Dominion of Newfoundland, but have no known grave.

The vigil occurred on June 29 at the Confederation Building in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The unknown soldier returned to Newfoundland with Operation Distinction, an operation in which the Canadian Armed Forces supports the Government of Canada’s Military History Commemoration Program. The program goes hand in hand with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) ceremonies and commemorative events.
