The tenth anniversary of Earth Hour will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 local time on Saturday, March 25.
The intention of Earth Hour is to get as many people, businesses, and landmarks to switch off their lights to bring attention to climate change action.
“Earth Hour is more than an event. It is a movement. Over the last 10 years, we have achieved massive environmental impact. Together with your support, we’re helping change laws, lives and our planet! How great is that?” states the Earth Hour website.
Earth Hour is co-ordinated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
So what is the impact of Earth Hour?
Well, according to last year’s reports, 178 countries and territories took part and more than 400 landmarks, including the Eiffel Tour, the Empire State Building, and the Tokyo Tower, switched off on Earth Hour 2016. Around the world, there were more than 6,000 Earth Hour events and 1.2 million individual actions taken. The movement received a lot of buzz on social media with 2.5 billion uses of the hashtag leading up to and on the day of, from January to March.
