Contract renewed to 5 Wing Goose Bay existing Wing support services and facilities maintenance
This month, Public Services and Procurement Canada awarded a contract to renew 5 Wing Goose Bay’s existing Wing support services and facilities maintenance contract.
“Our Defence Team members deserve well-maintained facilities to train and operate effectively, says Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence. “This contract helps guarantee that 5 Wing Goose Bay’s facilities are well-kept and, importantly, that the Wing is well-functioning, so our personnel can continue to carry out the important work that we ask of them. This contract will ensure the success of 5 Wing Goose Bay operations for years to come.”
Well-maintained infrastructure and well-supported operations are essential to ensure Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) defence capability and capacity.
10-year contract
The 10-year contract is valued at $694 million and up to $1.5 billion over 20 years if two five-year extension options are exercised. The contract was awarded to Serco Canada Inc. of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and is expected to provide significant economic opportunities for the region, sustaining approximately 250 jobs over 10 years.
Yvonne Jones, member of parliament for Labrador commented, “The Canadian Armed Forces is an integral part of the Goose Bay community and this contract is a great economic opportunity for the region. This important investment in infrastructure supports our military, and will create good jobs and strong economic opportunities for Labrador.”
Work under this contract will continue to cover a wide range of real property and operational support services, including airfield operations support and general maintenance and daily management of buildings, grounds, and infrastructure at the Wing. The CAF and the Department of National Defence (DND) will continue to oversee all aspects of Wing operations, as well as core matters of administration and finance.
In addition, this partnership with the private sector complements the existing real property workforce and will not affect the jobs of existing indeterminate DND personnel. 5 Wing Goose Bay supports a wide variety of military operations, including joint training for the CAF, Canada’s Allies, and NORAD.
Well-Maintained Infrastructure
As well as ensuring that the CAF members at Goose Bay will have a well-maintained infrastructure and operational support, Anita Anand, minister of public services and procurement mentioned, “This investment is expected to create and support local jobs including a portion for Indigenous community.”
The contract includes an Indigenous Benefits Plan, which will see $100 million allocated to employment and training opportunities for Indigenous peoples.
These operational support services, as well as the maintenance and operation of the Wing’s facilities, infrastructure, and airfield, have been provided by the private sector since 1998.
