Place a Christmas Wreath at Beechwood Cemetery
Wreaths Across Canada will be placing a wreath on the headstone of every veteran buried at the National Military Cemetery (Beechwood Cemetery) in Ottawa on December 7 at 1:30pm.
This simple, but effective, thank-you is the premise behind the Wreaths Across Canada program.
“It is our fervent hope this practice will spread across Canada and eventually every military cemetery will be adorned with wreaths every year. The wreaths symbolize our thanks to those who have served their country in the military and now lie at rest,” said Craig McPhee founder of Wreaths Across Canada.
Following a brief ceremony wreaths will be distributed.
The Canadian Military Wives Choir will lead the singing of Oh Canada, there will be a prayer led by a military padre, then team leaders and cadets will guide volunteers as the wreaths are placed on headstones. Dressing warmly is recommended.
WAC intends to place close to 3,000 real balsam wreaths on the graves of the fallen. Organizers welcome veterans, military personnel and the public to attend. All may assist in placing the wreaths as a way to remember and honour those who served, and as a way to teach Canadian youth the value of freedom.
“You will never forget the sight of these beautiful wreaths adorning the rows and rows of military headstones,” said McPhee.
Wreaths Across Canada Inc, is a registered Canadian Charitable Corporation governed by a board of directors. Started in 2007 by Craig McPhee, a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, WOC’s mission is to remember the contributions of Canadian military personnel who lie in military cemeteries across Canada. Their objectives are to honour those who served in Canada in war and in peace, and to teach Canadians, particularly youth, the cost of preserving freedom and democracy.
Donations of time and dollars are gratefully accepted by the WOC organization. Funds raised are put toward developing youth programs. McPhee is eager and willing to share best practices with any volunteers interested in implementing a similar program at any other military cemetery in Canada.
