Mother’s Day

It was spring 2002 and I had just learned my husband was going to be in the field for Mother’s Day. I was in disbelief and choked. What husband would plan to schedule an exercise to begin on Mother’s Day? With a quick judgement – he obviously didn’t love his wife – I made a note to complain to my husband.

When my husband and I were making dinner that night I shared with him my thoughts about the exercise. As I spoke my husband became quiet and a little white. He walked over to the calendar on the wall flipped to the month of May and asked what day was Mother’s Day?

As you might have guessed, my husband had a hand in planning the exercise to begin on Mother’s Day. Fortunately, he went to work the next day and the exercise start date was changed, which meant I was able to have a break, hopefully, like many mothers across the county you were able to do that this Mother’s Day.

However, unlike the training exercise that could be changed, there are a lot of military spouses who celebrated Mother’s Day without their spouses. And, there were more military moms, and I include military spouses’ moms in this category, who celebrated Mother’s day without spending time with their child due to a distance, deployment or death.

Whatever the case may be, if you are a mom, I pray that your Mother’s Day was all that you wished for and more. That you were spoiled – even if it meant you spoiling yourself.
