Vicki L MorrisonJulian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence announced earlier this week a $19.5 million investment in defence infrastructure at six Toronto facilities.
The work will be carried out over the next two years, and begin this summer.
“Investments in defence infrastructure across Canada will ensure that students, reservists, regular force personnel, and their families benefit from a better learning environment and modern facilities,” said Fantino.
The six facilities which will benefit from these infrastructure investments include the co-located Toronto Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) and Denison Armoury will be upgraded and repaired at a cost of $3.6 million. Work includes a heating and ventilation system and emergency generator for the Armoury and other repairs and upgrades for the Toronto MFRC.
The Canadian Forces College will be upgraded and repaired at a cost of $4 million. The work includes the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the Curtis Hall.
HMCS York naval reserve division will benefit from new sanitation lines, along with other repairs including the jetty retaining wall, at a cost of $4 million, and Moss Park and Fort York armouries will see interior and exterior renovations and health and safety upgrades at a cost of $7.9 million.
These significant investments, announced by Minister Fantino, will improve the working environment for military personnel and their families.
“It is another example of our Government’s commitment to upgrading Canadian Armed Forces facilities, including family resource centres. These significant investments throughout Toronto will also help fuel job creation and be a positive boost to our local economy,” said Fantino.
The federal infrastructure investments, announced by Prime Minister Harper in November 2014, will build and renew infrastructure across the country, creating jobs and economic prosperity for local communities.
The Department of National Defence (DND) has received $452 million for the repair and upgrade of Canadian Armed Forces facilities.
Over the next two years, $135 million will be invested in projects involving repairs to roofs, siding, plumbing, and heating and ventilation systems. By completing this work, DND will ultimately improve the efficiency and reduce maintenance costs at these facilities.
The Government estimates that accelerated investments will also support the creation of over 10,000 jobs in communities across Canada, including the Toronto area, by the end of 2016.
