Juno Beach Centre Fellowship Program

The board of directors of the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, France, is seeking applicants to the first Juno Beach Centre Fellowship Program. Students with a passion for learning and a keen interest in new and exciting research experiences are welcome to apply.

The annual program will aim to foster the education and research work of two graduate students, either Master’s or Ph.D candidates, studying in the field of Canadian military history.

“The program offers students a unique opportunity to foster their future careers and enhance their educational experience. The duration of the Fellowship is one year, with research taking place within the student’s post-secondary institution in Canada, and up to eight days at the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, Normandy,” said Jenna Zuschlag Misener, executive manager, Juno Beach Centre Association.

The Juno Beach Centre Fellowship program is open to students studying a variety of disciplines, including Military History, International Affairs, Political Science, Tourism Management, Psychology, Fine Arts, and Geography. The application deadline for the inaugural 2015/2016 Fellowship term is March 31, 2015.

Each year will contain a broad theme from which the Fellow will draw inspiration to elevate their research topic. To mark the inaugural year of the Program, the theme for the 2015/16 Fellowship is, From Vimy to Juno.

“Research work should include many aspects of the theme From Vimy to Juno like exploring the links between the First and Second World War, addressing the similarities and differences between the two wars, and the experience of soldiers, civilians, and life on the home front, or examining the aftermath of both wars and the preservation and commemoration of events,” said Misener.

Throughout the Fellowship term, the Fellow is expected to act as representative for the Juno Beach Centre, as well as attend events, conferences, and communicate regular updates on the status of their research to the staff in Canada and Normandy.

On completion of the Fellowship and delivery of the final research report, recipients will receive an honorarium of $2000.

The JBC is Canada’s Second World War museum and cultural centre located in Courseulles-sur-Mer on the historic beach of the Canadian D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. The centre pays homage to the 45,000 Canadians who lost their lives during the war.

Opened in 2003 by veterans and volunteers with a vision to create a permanent memorial to all Canadians who served during the Second World War, the centre’s mandate is to preserve this legacy for future generations through education and remembrance.

The Juno Beach Centre Association owns and operates the Juno Beach Centre. The Canadian non-profit charitable corporation is governed by a board of directors based in Burlington, Ontario, Canada.
