Vicki L MorrisonOrganizers are excited to announce Edmonton’s Seventh Annual Loops for the Troops will be held on Canadian Armed Forces Day June 7, 2015.
The fundraising event includes a half-marathon, ten or five-kilometre run and a military-mile family walk in the neighbourhood where the Edmonton Military Family Resource Centre us located.
“Routes are looped in a rough perimeter circling the Edmonton MFRC. Participants have several choices of races or walks, varying in length. We encourage everyone from families to avid runners to participate. It’s a great day for a great cause,” explained Angela Duckworth, communication coordinator, Edmonton MFRC.
Funds raised go towards maintaining, expanding and developing Edmonton MFRC programs and services that support military families. The 2014 event brought in close to $15,000, with all proceeds from the event supporting local programs and services for military families at the Edmonton Garrison MFRC.
Edmonton Loops for Troops is dedicated to Canadian Armed Forces members, their families, and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of Canada. With more participants each year, Edmonton Loops for the Troops has become a well-supported community event.
Loops for the Troops was founded in Calgary in 2008 by Michael Hornburg to honour his son, fallen soldier Corporal Nathan Hornburg.
“The Calgary fundraiser was so successful word spread across Alberta. The family of fallen soldier Corporal Bryce Keller and the Edmonton Military Family Resource Centre formed a partnership. The first Edmonton Loops for the Troops took place in 2009,” said Duckworth..
Corporal Hornburg, a reserve soldier from the King’s Own Calgary Regiment, based out of Calgary, Alberta was killed by a mortar shell on September 24, 2007, twenty-seven days into his deployment, in a daring attempt to rescue a disabled tank after a daylong battle. That day four other soldiers were wounded during Operation SADIQ SARBAAZ approximately 47 kilometres west of Kandahar City in the Panjwayi District of Afghanistan.
Corporal Keller of the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based out of Garrison Edmonton was killed on August 3, 2006 in an RPG attack while valiantly and heroically assisting an injured soldier in Pashmul, Afghanistan.
