The Family Unit
Free NCR National Child Day Superhero Celebration
The Canada Aviation and Space Museum and the Military Family Resource Centre of the National Capital Region are hosting their Fifth Annual National Child Day celebration on Sunday, November 16, 10:00a.m. – 4:00p.m. Free museum admission and parking is being offered to all military personnel and their families for the day.
The superhero-themed event is taking place at museum. Children are invited to dress up as their favourite superheroes and participate in a full day of crafts, tours and activities designed to celebrate Canada’s military heroes and their families.
Activities and shows for families are scheduled throughout the day.
“The people you’ll see here are brave heroes, such as the members of the Canadian Forces Military Police, the Ottawa Fire Service, Sauvetage Bénévole Outaouais – Ottawa Volunteer Search and Rescue, as well as the Ottawa Tactical Unit. We want to acknowledge how important they are to families,” said Christina Lucas, media and communications, Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
Real life first-responder superheroes from across the National Capital Region will be on site to greet and interact with military families who come to the museum.
Members of the Canadian Armed Forces military police will be in attendance, with their very popular police vehicle, replete with lights and sirens. Star Wars fans will be excited to know members of Ottawa’s Capital City Garrison, 501st Legion will don their Star Wars costumes to meet families.
“It would not be a party without an Ottawa Fire Services truck. Children are invited to jump on board and check out the jump seats and equipment. Firefighters from Station 51 welcome the opportunity to show military families their truck and answer any fire prevention questions children or parents may have,” explained Lucas.
Members of the Ottawa Police Tactical Unit will be rappelling down from the museum’s catwalk. The unit responds to over 100 high risk incidents per year. They are highly skilled everyday superheroes, serving on the front line at the many embassies and consulates in Ottawa, as well as the Ottawa Airport.
Face painting, and superhero themed crafts will be taking place. A printmaking workshop let’s kids see the Canadian Armed Forces in action.
Children can build their own superhero, decorate a superhero mask, then check out scenes of Banshees flying over Canadian navy ships, to Hercules unloading jeeps in Afghanistan, to the Snowbirds flying in formation over the museum.
Lucas asks, who wouldn’t want to make their own superhero glider then see how far it can fly on the runway? Ejection seat demonstrations, fun with Play Doh, scooting or peddling an airplane down a runway. There will be activities for all ages aimed at celebrating military heroes.
