Deployed Canadian Armed Forces Member Passes Away Due to Medical Complications

A Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) member deployed to Belgium passed away from medical complications this week.

Lieutenant-Colonel Kent Miller passed away on Nov. 25 while serving with Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Casteau, Belgium. The deployment fell under Operation UNIFIER.

“We are all deeply saddened by the death of Lieutenant-Colonel (LCol) Kent Miller, who passed away on November 25, 2024. LCol Miller was a father, a husband and a comrade, and his loss will be felt by many,” said LGen. Steve Boivin, Commander Canadian Joint Operations Command, in a statement.

While deployed to Casteau, Belgium, Lieutenant-Colonel Kent Miller passed away from medical complications.

More than Two Decades of Loyal Service

LCol. Miller, according to a biography released by the Department of National Defence (DND), was an Engineering Officer who served in the CAF for 24 years.

Most recently, he served as the Commanding Officer of 41 Combat Engineer Regiment in Alberta. He was deployed to SHAPE in a planning and coordinating capacity, read the statement.

“Kent and I served in Afghanistan together, as well as in 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters. I am more than saddened at the loss of my friend and brother-in-arms. My thoughts are with his family at this time,” said Col. Cole Petersen, Commander, Joint Task Force Ukraine, in a statement.

DND also extended its condolences in a statement, “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of LCol Miller.”
