Government seeking input for National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan

From January 2nd to 20th, 2020, the Government of Canada has asked Canadians to share design considerations for the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan. These include sharing their thoughts on the design criteria, providing feedback on its objectives, form, and character, as well as the type of visitor experience required.  

“Canadians recognize the incredible dedication that our service men and women, and civilians, made while serving in the whole-of-government mission in Afghanistan,” said Lawrence MacAulay, minister of veterans affairs and associate minister of national defence. 

He added, “This location will offer an accessible and fitting place to quietly reflect and honour the courage, sacrifices, and achievements of those who served during our country’s mission in Afghanistan. This Monument will be a perpetual place to remember their selfless duty to our country.” 

In October 2001, Canada joined the United Nations-mandated mission in Afghanistan to support the multinational military efforts there until March 2014. Over 40,000 Canadians in uniform, along with hundreds of civilians and government officials, have served in Afghanistan. 

Many died as a result of their service, including CAF members, foreign aid workers, a government contractor, a journalist, and a diplomat. Thousands have been injured, both physically and psychologically, throughout the course of the mission. 

The monument’s objective is to recognize the commitment and sacrifice of Canadians who have served and the support provided to them by those at home. 

Tobi Nussbaum, chief executive officer of the National Capital Commission stated, “The National Capital Commission is proud to work with its partners on this National Monument. The site location will give all visitors an opportunity to recognize the commitment and sacrifice of Canadians who served in Afghanistan, and the support provided to them by Canadians at home.”

Through PubliVate Inc., an online consultation is being held on behalf of Veterans Affairs Canada. Participants are encouraged to help inform the design guidelines, which will be used by the design teams. 

In the fall of this year, there will be an in-person viewing of five design concepts, accompanied with an online questionnaire.

The monument will be positioned near the Canadian War Museum, slightly west of downtown Ottawa. The inauguration of the monument is set to be scheduled for 2023.
