BDC celebrates entrepreneurs with Small Business Week

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) is organized its 40th Small Business Week, which kicked off Oct. 20.

The week is designed to celebrate small businesses across the nation, with close to 10,000 entrepreneurs gathering to learn and network with other like-minded individuals throughout Canada.

Michael Denham, BDC’s President and CEO, explains that “Canada is one of the most entrepreneurial nations in the world; our history is full of great men and women who built globally competitive businesses.” As a strong advocate for innovation and entrepreneurship, Mr. Denham ensures that BDC stands as a number one support for Canadian entrepreneurs.

“Since 1944, we’ve been at their side, helping them build and grow their businesses. As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we look forward to everything we can still achieve together,” he adds.

Mary Ng, minister of small business and export promotion, has recognized the impact of these events held by the BDC.

She commented, “Thanks to the hard work of the BDC, Small Business Week has become an anticipated annual recognition of the backbone of the Canadian Economy: small businesses! When small businesses succeed, our economy grows, and middle-class jobs are created, which is why our government is working hard to reduce the red tape and make it easier for businesses to start-up, scale-up, and access new markets.”

For 2019, the BDC Small Business Week is aiming to highlight the changing face of entrepreneurship and discover what keeps business owners motivated. The week itself involves many events, including workshops, seminars, and boot camps, in order to provide smaller businesses with useful resources to continue growth.

“This year, we want to showcase their hard work and successes and explore the key entrepreneurial skills that have underpinned their growth,” said Denham.

Some of these events include discussions on effective digital content strategies, with social media management standing at the forefront of digital marketing.

There are also workshops designed to help entrepreneurs design their business websites, grow their e-commerce sales, and understand how to use Google ads. Events will be held across the provinces, with the option to attend some classes online.
