Foundation accepting application for Vimy Pilgrimage Award
The Vimy Foundation is now accepting applications from youth ages 14- 17 for the Vimy Pilgrimage Award.
Established in 2013, the Vimy Pilgrimage Award recognizes the actions of Canadian youth.
“The Vimy Foundation created the Vimy Pilgrimage Award to recognize the actions of young people who are dedicated to the betterment of society by demonstrating an outstanding commitment to volunteer work through positive contributions, notable deeds, or bravery that benefits their peers, school, community, province, or country,” says Stella Begic, programs manager, The Vimy Foundation.
Each year, the Vimy Foundation receives over 200 applications from youth across the country. The applications consist of two – 500-word essays, a personal statement video, a detailed resume, a reference letter from a teacher, guidance counsellor or principal, service club volunteer organization, etc.
Between November and January, a group of evaluators selects a number of applicants to move forward to the interview round.
Twenty award winners will take part in a week-long educational program in Belgium and France. The trip features daily visits to important First World War sites, including several museums, cemeteries, and battlefields.
“The VPA is an experiential educational program so the participants will be learning about Canada’s role in the First World War, as well as learning how to think critically and discussing various history-themed topics,” says Begic.
Applications for the 2020 Vimy Pilgrimage Award are being accepted until November 17, 2019. Award recipients will be announced no later than January 20, 2020.
