Veterans organize Hits for Heroes to raise money to help injured veterans
The first annual Hits for Heroes Ball Tournament is being hosted at the Ray Twinney Recreation Centre in Newmarket on July 13.
The tournament was created by Renos for Heroes Board Member, Michael Humphries, and military veteran and Cadence Health and Wellness founder Chris Dupee.
“We were thinking of ways to get the guys off the couch and back in a friendly competitive game,” says Humphries. “And to raise awareness within our communities that there are lots of people who care.”
More than 100 Canadian military personnel have lost limbs since the Afghan mission began in 2002. Many who require resources and services to help them lead their best lives.
Renos for Heroes (RFH), a non-profit foundation that provides renovations and building services to injured members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Since launching in 2010, RFH has raised over $400,000 for injured military members.
“Lots of groups of veteran-run organizations out there that want to help,” says Humphries. “Whether its renovation or helping with forms to apply for a job, fill out VAC forms, assist in getting help for mental health issues, we are out there to help knowing our brothers and sisters are out there and need help but are too proud to ask for it.”
Humphries knows that feeling too well, having put off getting help when he needed it.
“I myself waited 10 years to apply for a medical pension for an injury from my time served. But this is not about me. I made it through the system, and all we want to do is raise awareness that these groups are here to help.”
The tournament is accepting teams of 10 players, at $200 per team, and have a variety of sponsorship opportunities for individuals who want to support the event, but not play.
