The Royal Canadian Dragoons Immediate Response Unit Moving to Fight Flooding
May 11, 2019 – Petawawa, ON – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
The Royal Canadian Dragoons (RCD) Immediate Response Unit (IRU) from the 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (2 CMBG), will be conducting a military road move from Garrison Petawawa to locations between Petawawa and Ottawa this morning, to help fight anticipated flooding.
This morning, residents can expect to see a mix of green armoured vehicles travelling on highways and roads throughout Renfrew County and the Ottawa Valley towards Ottawa. Motorists are reminded to please use extra caution when driving around military convoys.
Soldiers from the RCD IRU are augmenting Joint task Force Central (JTFC) troops and will be working to address the immediate needs of local communities, in support of the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre.
Beginning April 25, 2019, JTFC was called to assist civilian authorities in Ontario with flood fighting efforts such as building sandbag walls, protecting infrastructure and critical roads, and helping stabilize the situation. As the situation in communities evolves, the allocation of troops will change according to Provincial priorities.
