Private Thomas Welch’s mom to lay wreath on behalf of mothers who have lost child in line of duty

On November 1, 2018, the Royal Canadian Legion announced this year’s National Silver Cross Mother. 

This year Ms. Anita Cenerini will be responsible for placing a wreath at the National War Memorial on Nov. 11 on behalf of all Canadian mothers who have lost their children in the line of duty.

Her son, Private Thomas Welch, died by suicide on May 8th, 2004, after serving as a C9 Gunner as part of Op ATHENA, Roto 0 in Afghanistan.

Private Welch served with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, based in Petawawa, ON. He was 22 years old at the time of his death.

“The Legion is honoured each year to name the National Silver Cross Mother who embodies so many characteristics that Canadians value: courage, resilience, hope. We know her presence, and the example she sets gives many other mothers and families of fallen soldiers much comfort and strength,” says Brad White, National Executive Director, The Royal Canadian Legion.

Choosing the National Silver Cross Mother for Remembrance Day is a time-honoured tradition of the Royal Canadian Legion and is not just limited to the ceremony on Nov. 11. During her tenure, Ms. Cenerini will fulfill other official functions. 

Ms. Cenerini spent much of her early life in Ontario’s northern and southern regions and now lives in Winnipeg with her husband Grant and their teenaged son Jacob. She spends her time participating in outdoor activities and recreational sports while still finding time to volunteer with community organizations and church activities and spending time with her grandson, Reed.
