Paige LeClairEvery evening until Remembrance Day virtual poppies will be raining down the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill to remember those who gave their all for Canada.
In conjunction with their annual Poppy Campain, the Royal Canadian Legion’s will be running the virtual display until November 11, 2018.
The Poppy Drop features 117,000 digital poppies falling, each one representing one of Canada’s fallen since the beginning of the First World War.
As part of the National Poppy Campaign, the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Drop light show runs every evening from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. In addition, virtual poppies will cascade down the National Art Center’s new “Kipnes Lantern” and the “Blades” on November 11, from 7:00am to midnight.
“Every fall, the respect and gratitude Canadians feel for the men and women who have served our country is reflected in their generosity during the Poppy Campaign,” says Dominion President Thomas D. Irvine. “None of us must ever forget the price paid for the open and free society we enjoy today.”
During this exhibit, there will be two large screens on Parliament Hill that show the Virtual Wall of Honour, a silent video sharing the faces of Canadian Veterans who have passed from across the country.
This year, volunteers including young cadets will help distribute over 20 million poppies. Canadians who donate to the campaign online will receive a digital poppy in remembrance of a Veteran of their choice.
Money raised during the campaign is given to military veterans and their families. In October 2016, 16.7 million was raised and dispersed through October 2017.
Poppies are available at local grocers, businesses, and legions across Canada.
