Trio of BC mountain peaks could be named after fallen soldiers

Just west of Harrison Lake, BC, stand three mountain peaks that the province of British Columbia has considered naming after three soldiers who died while serving in Afghanistan.

Proposals have been sent to the BC Geographical Names Office for the official name change of the three peaks after Master Corporal Colin Bason, Private Terry John Street, and Private Garrett Chidley. All three soldiers died when the vehicles they were driving hit explosive devices.

Master Corporal Bason, originally from Aldergrove/Abbotsford, was a part of the Royal Westminster Regiment. He was 28 when he died in Kandahar in 2007. 

Private Street, originally from Surrey, was a part of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was 24 when he died in Panjwaii District in 2008. 

Private Chidley, who enlisted in Vancouver, BC., was originally from Cambridge, Ont. He was a member of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was 21 when he died in Kandahar in 2009. 

At this point, the province hasn’t been given the official go-ahead to officially change the names of the mountain peaks. Letters have been sent to local governments and First Nations groups in the area to confirm if the trio of mountain peaks currently have traditional names.
