2 Combat Engineer Regiment to host reunion in July

The 2 Combat Engineer Regiment (2 CER), based out of CFB Petawawa, will be holding one of the largest reunions in its history this summer to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the regiment and the 20th anniversary of Neder Rijn Engineer Park.

2 CER has a rich history dating back to the Second World War. The unit served with distinction both in the Second World War and the Korean campaign and has provided engineers with parachute capability to the Canadian Army since 1949.

Although originally formed in 1931 as the 1st Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers, 2 CER formally came into being in 1977 when 1 Field Squadron was amalgamated with 1 Airborne Field Squadron.

To celebrate this rich heritage, the 40Twenty 2 CER Reunion is inviting all members of the regiment, past and present to Petawawa, ON on the weekend of July 7-9.

A wide variety of activities are planned for the weekend to not only celebrate the occasion but reunite friends, old and new.

On Friday attendees can enjoy a meet and greet dinner and a parade to recognize a change of the regimental sergeant major.

Saturday’s activities consist of a golf tournament, motorcycle rally and family fun time. In the evening, reunion attendees will convene for the signature event of the weekend: the dinner dance.

The weekend will then round off on Sunday with a farewell brunch.

“It’s a great event to reconnect with former members of the regiment, to introduce young corporals and master corporals to guys that were here 30, 40 years ago, just the opportunity to interact with our short term history and gain that connection, that can be used later on.

“For the people coming back, it’s a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends that they may not have seen since their time here,” said Maj. Jeff Day, Deputy Commanding Officer 2 CER.

The 40Twenty Reunion not only celebrates four decades of 2 CER but also celebrates 20 years of being housed in the Neder Rijn Engineer Park. Neder Rijin Engineer Park, named after the Dutch river over which Royal Canadian Engineers evacuated 2,000 British soldiers during the Second World War, is home to all of 2 CER’s facilities including offices, storage and training grounds.
