Bed and Breakfasts for Vets

BBCanada.com is pleased to be participating in Bed and Breakfasts for Vets, a Canadian tribute to veterans and military personnel. In Canada, Bed and Breakfasts as well as Inns are offering free or discounted rooms on the nights of November 10 or November 11, 2014 to commemorate Remembrance Day.

First developed in the United States in 2008, the promotion has grown throughout North America.

“As business owners we want to show our appreciation to military members and vets. We want to recognize all they do and all they have done for us in the past,” said Lorna Wells, owner of The Old Millpond Bed and Breakfast in Clinton, Prince Edward Island. This is the first year Lorna and her husband Glenn have participated in the initiative.

To see a list of Bed and Breakfasts involved across Canada visit BBCanada.com. B&Bs in the program will have a poppy logo on their listing indicating their participation. “If you want to book with a participating B&B you need to contact owners directly by phone or email. Don’t use the online reservation system. You’ll find most rooms will be double occupancy. Proof of identification for veteran, or current military personnel status will be requested,” explained Wells. Participating B&Bs for 2014 are added daily to the website. Some B&Bs also offer year round specials through the Canadian Forces Appreciation Program.

“We do accept quite number of different pieces of identification. We’ll take a Record of Service Card, any Veterans Affairs Canada Benefit Card, Discharge Certificate, Statement of Service or Certificate of Service from any branch of the CF. We also accept valid DND Temporary ID card or Canadian Forces Appreciation Program membership card with photo identification,” said Wells. It is possible that a credit card may be required to reserve the room, and for any additional charges incurred. “Booking policies do vary for each B&B. Financial penalties may occur for no-shows. I know people will be considerate in letting B&B owners know if their plans change so owners can give the rooms to another deserving service person or vet. This is a very special program for my husband and I. We are also participating because my father in law got his wings right here in Summerside, PEI. He was a member of the British RCAF. In our family the military is never forgotten.”
