Military family online employment training series kicks off new year

Military Family Services’ (MFS) recently developed and highly popular Work It Out with MFS program returns in the new year with a new series: “The Military Job Search.”

The first session in this new series, entitled One Size Does Not Fit All: Tailoring Your Resume, will be held twice, once on Jan. 25 and once on Jan. 26.

“After some consultations with Military Family Resource Centres, we realized that sometimes it’s difficult for a spouse to get into a centre for training, for employment support, or for employment and career development. So, we wanted to increase accessibility to employment services across Canada, and one way we thought of doing that was by providing online training,” said Katie Ochin, Employment and Entrepreneurship Program Manager, with MFS.

Therefore, MFS decided that from Sept. 2017 to June 2018, it will be partnering with experts in the field to present monthly, online, career training sessions to bring the Work It Out With MFS program to military families.

The series is broken down into several 40-minute sessions on relevant career topics.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions during the session and will be given exercises to work on after the session.

“We do understand that as a military spouse, or military family member, that maintaining constant career development at times can be challenging…because of the factors associated with the military lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

“So, what the entire series of Work It Out With MFS is really focused on is taking control of your career and career situation and, even though there are challenges, overcoming those challenges,” said Ochin.

The Work It Out program started in September with the “Take Control of Your Career” series. This series explored steps military spouses can take to manage their careers and find career options best-suited to their needs.

The new series will build on “Take Control of Your Career” and provide military spouses with the tools on how to go about securing a job in their chosen career field. The series will consist of four sessions that will touch on resume writing skills, how to make the most of LinkedIn, and how to do well on Federal Public Service Applications.

Due to popular demand, evening sessions have been added to the 2018 sessions.

One Size Does Not Fit All: Tailor Your Resume will take place on Jan. 25 at 19:30 EST and January 26 at 13:00 EST. To register for the session click here. Spaces are limited.
