We all love our pets, and we want to keep them around for a long time. To do that, responsible pet owners need to pay attention to the health and well-being of Man’s Best Friend and Feline. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) will be highlighting the importance of protecting animal health through vaccinations during Animal Health Week which is being held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6.
The CVMA is the national and international voice for Canada’s veterinarians, providing leadership and advocacy for veterinary medicine. Animal Health Week is a national public awareness campaign organized by the CVMA and hosted by veterinarians across Canada. Each year, during the first week of October, veterinarians and veterinary hospitals and clinics across Canada promote animal health and responsible animal ownership as part the of Animal Health Week celebrations.
Veterinarians explain that there are significant reasons to vaccinate your pets. They are safe and effective and prevent illnesses. Vaccinations prevent diseases that can be passed not only from animal to animal but also from animal to human. They are an essential part of annual health exams and can help avoid costly treatments for diseases that can be prevented. Vets also note that vaccinations are tailored to each animal based on its breed, age, overall health, and disease exposure risk.
“Many factors including the migration and expansion of parasite populations, the importation of domestic and farm animals from other countries, and the mutation and increased resistance of disease-causing bacteria have caused great concern in recent years for animal owners and veterinarians alike,” says CVMA president Dr. Terri Chotowetz. “Fortunately, at the same time, we have never been in a better position to protect the health and lives of the animals in our care because of the advances in animal health care and vaccinations.”
More than 200 veterinary practices across Canada are celebrating Animal Health Week through various events while engaging their clientele through educational resources. Animal Health Week is done in partnership with the Registered Veterinary Technologists and Technicians of Canada. Animal Health Week is generously sponsored by Petsecure Pet Health Insurance, Merck Animal Health, and iFinance Petcard.
